My answer is that the law doesn't give me a guarantee to make a personal copy - it only ensures that I can't be prosecuted for doing so. One writer pointed out there are laws that make it legal for me to make a duplicate for personal use, implying that because the law exists I won't lose my "right" to do that. That was not was I was advocating at all: Napster is stealing, but invasive copy protection schemes that prevent me from making a personal duplicate of a CD (digital or (1 of 9) MacTRACK | A Copyright Solution otherwise) is not the solution. There were a few who didn't seem to read my column carefully and assumed that because I'm critical of certain aspects of copyright enforcement that I'm therefore supportive of Napster and stealing songs.
